Greg's Album of the Month, January 2004

"Never heard of em."

That's usually the response people give me when I bring up the Modern Lovers. Jonathan Richman's original band put out one of the greatest rock albums ever in 1976, simply called The Modern Lovers.

Like many, I first became familiar with Jonathan when I saw him appear in the Farrelly Brothers movie, There's Something About Mary. Jonathan Richman is the guitarist and singer who serenades the audience, appearing between scenes throughout the film. I was curious as to who this guy was, and found some reviews of his music on the internet.

The Modern Lovers has not left my CD changer since.

The Modern Lovers were a part of the mid-1970's punk movement, but I think this is a straight-up rock n' roll album above all. The songs are simple, rocking and unique. It kicks off high-energy with Roadrunner, a simple rock song where Richman declares, "I'm in love with Massachussets!". Other favorites are Old World, Girlfriend, and the classic Pablo Picasso (which is covered by David Bowie, on his most recent album: Reality).

Be sure to check this one out first chance you get!
